Michal is a young boy longing to be reconnected with his father who escaped Poland during the communist 1980's. This short story explores the innocence of childhood set against a bleak and frightening environment. It also offers a glimpse into cultural identity, how it can encompass the simplest of things, things that are often lost or left behind in the process of moving on.Lessons in Eating Soup is set in Poland in the early 1980’s, during the aftermath of Martial Law. Michal is a young boy longing to be reconnected with his father who escaped the country some years prior, in search of a better life for his family. The story explores the innocence of childhood against a bleak and sometimes frightening environment. It is also a glimpse into cultural identity, how it can encompass the simplest of things, things that are often lost or left behind in the process of moving on.
